Literature CCSS

Through looking at literature state standards I realized that there are a lot of key standards that we use day to day. For example, “ Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.”. In college we write many papers not just in English class. In these papers the instructions usually state to cite evidence to support your claim. Citing evidence is something that makes our claims more credible by including POV’s from other scholars. In the Literature Standards at each grade level from 6-12 this is the first standard on the list. Yet, after every grade the standard is more detailed. This is something I think is great because students might struggle with the concept of citing evidence, but if they are doing it every year from 6th grade through 12th grade then they will be practiced by the time college comes around. Not only does this this standard help students create more credible claims. However, it helps them avoid plagiarism. In high school or middle school they can practice a lot. If they mess up and forget to cite some teachers will just kindly remind them. However, in college this state standard saves them from larger consequences. These consequences can range from automatic F in the class or even expulsion from university depending on the professor and the severity. I think this helps students a lot in making them great writers as well as helping them avoid making costly mistakes. Along with that, students are taught who to cite from. In my years in high school I remember learning what sites to look at & what sites to avoid. It was interesting learning the trick of using websites that end in “.edu” and avoiding those that end in “.org”
