Learning Letter

Throughout English 486 I learned a lot of useful information. The information I read and the experiences I gained with the presentations are something I am going to carry for years to come. This course was one of the first that I took at Eastern that focused on the teaching aspect of English. I took other English courses, but none focused on instruction. The text presentations were great because I got to learn about teaching ideas from my classmates. I was exposed to a large variety of different teaching ideas. Some of those ideas I will incorporate in the classroom when I have my own classroom. Not only did I gain a lot of knowledge on teaching ideas, but I also gained a lot of information on texts. There were a lot of books which I wanted to check out after I saw some presentations which was great. As for my content portfolio I enjoyed going back and looking at old work. When I was doing the work I didn’t realize that it was preparing me for teaching English. However, when I looked b...

Please include a detailed description of the text. Take into consideration that your colleagues might not be familiar with the text that you have chosen. A detailed description will include everything necessary for your classmates to gain an understanding of the text without reading it. Your job is to introduce the text in a complete way so that it is possible for others to decide when, where, and how this text might be appropriate.   This Text contains many useful resources for teaching writing. There are sample lessons which include step by step instructions on how to conduct the lesson plans. Also, each lesson plan includes a section where there is 1-2 paragraphs on how to modify the lesson if/when there are students with special needs in the classroom. A long with that, there is more to this book than lesson plans. Before every lesson plan there is a good portion of writing where the author speaks on particular strategies in teaching English. It is not a lesson plan book. Whi...

Literature CCSS

Through looking at literature state standards I realized that there are a lot of key standards that we use day to day. For example, “  Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.”. In college we write many papers not just in English class. In these papers the instructions usually state to cite evidence to support your claim. Citing evidence is something that makes our claims more credible by including POV’s from other scholars. In the Literature Standards at each grade level from 6-12 this is the first standard on the list. Yet, after every grade the standard is more detailed. This is something I think is great because students might struggle with the concept of citing evidence, but if they are doing it every year from 6th grade through 12th grade then they will be practiced by the time college comes around. Not only does this this standard help students create more credible claims. However, it helps them avo...

Your job is to introduce the text in a complete way so that it is possible for others to decide when, where, and how this text might be appropriate This text consists of Lesson Plans for teaching writing. These lesson plans are created by educators in secondary and post-secondary learning environments. These lesson plans are all deemed effective by the creators of the lesson plans themselves. There are seven sections: Writing Process, Portfolios, Literature, Research, Grammar, Writing on Demand, and Media. Each of these sections consists of lesson plans. Psychiatric Tales Handout

Psychiatric Tales Please include a detailed description of the text. Psychiatric Tales by Darryl Cunningham is a graphic novel that follows his time working in a Psychiatric Hospital. There he works with patients dealing with, dementia, schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder. There are 11 different stories all focusing on one issue. A long with that the author writes two stories about his own hardships with mental health.   2. Please explain why you chose this text. What was your rationale? How does your understanding of this text influence your thinking about your teaching. I c...

Visual Literacy

This week the reading was on Visual Literacy. There is a lot that goes into Visual Literacy. One thing that stood out to me was the subject of meaning and how it relates to Visual Literacy. In the NES text, the author writes, "Meaning does not exist in a text. Meaning exists in the interplay between viewers and readers and the text". In teaching, it is crucial to note that students will interpret material in different ways. For example, lets say im teaching and I show a video or a painting pertaining to the unit we are on. Student A will interpret in one way, but that does not mean Students B,C,D,E etc. will interpret it in the same way. In the Common Core State Standards there is no specific section on Visual Literacy. I think that is due to the latter. Visual literacy is interpreting information that comes in visual form. While this sounds simple I think it is difficult to set a standard for it. It is difficult because people interpret images in a different way. That is why...

Speaking and Listening

When it comes to Speaking and Listening, I enjoy the listening side of it. Listening requires little to no effort. Listening goes a long way in a classroom setting. For example, it is impossible to succeed in college if you are not a good listener. Most classes here at EWU are lecture classes and seminars where listening is the key to success. If you do not listen then you do not take notes and if you do not take notes then you do not pass. I know there is more to listening than just listening. There are some students who struggle with attention. I had many classmates whom could not pay attention due to ADD or something of that sort. It is unfortunate that some students struggle with this. However, these students whom struggle with listening are sometimes the best at Speaking. On the other hand, Speaking is not my strong suit. In class, the answer can be in my head but I will not speak up some times. Speaking is something I have been working on since my freshman year. There is som...

Discussion as a Way of Teaching

Reading "Discussion as a way of Teaching" by Stephen Brookfield was...different. Usually, articles which are thirty plus pages are a bunch of data and analysis. However, this article was more of a handbook for teachers. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article. Especially, the section on "Circle of Voices".  I feel as if this is something that could have helped me a lot in middle school and high school. In high school I had a tendency to keep quiet during discussions. There would even be times where I knew for a fact I had the right answer, but still I did not speak up. I do not know why that was the case. Yet, in a setting where the Circle of Voices was present, I would have thrived. The Circle of Voices was something that benefits those whom are quiet and shy. Many times students do not answer because they fear they will speak up at the same time as someone else. The uninterrupted time to share in Circle of Voices could take away that fear from students. Also, th...

Margaret Lieb Article Reflection

Culture Distance an Cultural Dimensions in Diverse ELT Environments by Margaret Lieb was a great read. Usually I read Scholarly Articles and I am not interested in the subject. However, I found this article intriguing and easy to read. I think this is due to the subject of the article. This article is about the teaching of English in Japan and the cultural effects of it. In this article I find many of Lieb's points interesting. For example, Lieb speaks on the rapid increase in intercultural communications and population. Coming from a community with a large population of Mexicans this is something that is familiar to me. Both of my parents were born in Mexico and then immigrated here to live out the "American Dream". The population of the town I am from is still mostly white. However, as the years go by the amount of different cultures and ethnicity's is growing exponentially. In Japan I can imagine that it is the same. Except, Japan is a country where they tried for ...

Discussion #1

Q:  What's your familiarity with graphic novels? Why/how might graphic novels be useful for the secondary English language arts classroom?  A: I am familiar with Graphic Novels, but I do not read them. Its not that I do not like graphic novels. I would just rather read text-based readings. I like visualizing the story my way rather than have the story visualized for me.  While they are not my thing I do know that they are quite popular among people of my age and even older people as well. Both my brothers enjoy graphic novels as well as some of my friends.  In terms of education Graphic Novels can be a practical way of engaging ALL students in some sort of reading. When I was in high school I heard many of my classmates say the phrase "I hate reading". Some of these classmates dreaded the thought of English class just because of the reading.  Most likely, they did not actually "hate" reading. However, reading was probably something they found to be tedious. G...
